It started with a need, a prayer and a sewing machine…
A few months ago, I met a veterinary student at a friend’s tea. As we chatted, she began to share a problem that she and her fellow African American women students were encountering. They were required to wear nurses caps for hours at a time. Unfortunately, the caps were not made with their hair in mind, and their hair was beginning to bear the impact with split ends and breakage. She ended the conversation with, “It would be great if someone made us satin-lined nurse caps for our hair.”
Sometime later, I shared that conversation with my mom, and an idea began to form. I asked my mom if she would be interested in learning a new skill and trying her hand at making a few caps. Although my mom had not sewn since her teenage years, she began to pray, asking God for a wise and discerning decision. And He gave her an answer. Yes, she should make satin-lined nurse caps – with a purpose.
Our TNC caps help meet the needs of African American nurses, but through the caps, we have the ability to do much more. Proceeds from each cap help us make caps for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. We do so to honor the memory of my mother’s mother, who had battled lung cancer, before going home to be with the Lord. We also honor the life of her son who had worked many years as a physician’s assistant before his passing last year.
We pray that our caps will help bring joy to those who wear them.
